Coolest My Little Pony Rainbow Dash Cake

I made this My Little Pony Rainbow Dash Cake for my daughter’s 4th birthday. We had a My Little Pony party, complete with live ponies for the kids to ride. I played on the Rainbow Dash pony specifically and came up with this cake design.

A week before the party my daughter helped me cut out the butterflies, hearts, stars and flowers out of rolled fondant. The day before the party I baked all the cakes. I made both a Wilton classic butter cake and a chocolate groom’s cake batter. Each tier had one layer of each type of cake, sealed together with homemade chocolate buttercream frosting.

I tinted the tiers lavender and sky blue and then created the rainbow cake layer out of a half round 3″ pan. I decorated the rainbow with colored M&M’s and used small marshmallows to make the clouds on each side of the rainbow. The marshmallows stuck together with frosting to stack on top of each other. To adhere the rainbow to the other layer and keep it from falling over, I used dowel rods through the top and down into the layer underneath. That way it didn’t move at all.

I finished it off with a piped ribbon between layer one and two. I used rainbow sprinkles on the cake to make it sparkle.

This was a fun cake to make and fairly simple, once you finished all the baking. You cannot attempt this cake with a boxed mix. You must use a firm cake to keep the layers from falling into each other. And, I also use cake separators and baking dowel rods to keep the cakes supported properly. This cake probably weighed 12 to 15 pounds when all put together.

I hope this inspires you to make something for your My Little Pony fan.

  2. This cake is just beautiful! =) My daughter wants a Rainbow Dash MLP party for her 4th in a few weeks. I was wondering what sizes your 2 round layers are? They look large in the photo. Thanks for all the tips!
