Cool Homemade Nemo and Friends Birthday Cake

I used 2 classic white cake mixes and added orange food coloring to make the Nemo and Friends Birthday Cake orange. I used blue food coloring for the buttercream icing. My son really loved the contrast and uniqueness of his cake. I used clip art of Nemo and friends for all of the images.

I enlarged Nemo and traced his image onto wax paper and then cut it out and used toothpicks to outline him onto the iced cake. I used a #18 tip to starpoint his entire image onto the cake where I wanted it. I made smaller images and printed 2 of each out-one as is and one rotated 180 degrees. This gave the 3D effect when I glued them together on each side of the toothpick. I placed the friends images where I liked them on the cake with Dori and Marlin by Nemo.

I used various tips and food colors to create the coral and reef coming onto the cake from the base of the “sand”. The sand was made by crushing up graham crackers in the food processor. I finished by using blue sprinkles on top to give the “bubble effect”. My son loved the shimmering and all of his favorite characters “jumping” above the cake.
