I was asked by a friend of a friend to make a boy’s baby shower cake for her friend (already three degrees of Kevin Bacon!). I was sent five idea photos ranging from a Louis Vuitton diaper bag to a teddy bear. The only stipulations were that the cake be two tiers and decorated in the party’s theme colors of light blue, royal blue, spring green, and brown. I did my research and looked around the web to get some inspiration.
I had come up with a few ideas and made some sketches. Then came the text message, “I don’t mean to be a pain, but could you add something about soccer to the cake?” Ummm…sure… Now what?
This is how the cake turned out. It’s a fairly basic cake – yellow cake with vanilla custard filling and vanilla butter cream beneath the fondant. The baby Nike is sculpted from Rice Krispie treats covered with fondant on a field of tinted coconut. I added a bit more of the soccer theme by converting the largest polka dots to soccer balls.
I was happy to deliver the cake to the mom-to-be and hope that the future dad (the soccer enthusiast) will be as pleased as she was. Big sister was just happy to hear that she’d be able to eat the baby shoe!
