My son wanted a Ninja Turtle birthday party so I let him pick a picture online of what he wanted the cake to look like. I was hoping he would pick just one character but he wanted all four! I started by making the cake (which I bought a cake mix from the store) the day before to give it time to cool before frosting it. I figured it would take some time to frost so I started the night before the party.
I make my own frosting by first mixing 1 and 1/4 cups of shortening, 1 tb spoon vanilla flavor, 2 tbs butter flavor and 1/2 ts salt. After mixing that add 1 package of powdered sugar and about 1/2 cup of milk. You may need to add more depending on how you want the frosting. Now this part is what takes the longest, use food coloring to mix the colors you need. I started with blue and did a crumb coat and then another coat to make the sky. Then I used black to create the street. Then I used black to outline the picture on the cake using Wilton decorating bags and tips. After I outlined, I followed the picture and filled in with the appropriate color. Then I used the remaining colors to decorate the edges.
The whole frosting process took about 3 hours but it was worth every minute to see how excited my son was with the finished product!
