This novelty cat cake was my first attempt at a sculpted cake, and let me tell you it was absolutely 100% enjoyable! I would do it over 1000 times if I had to. I started preparations a few days in advance just to get an idea of what I was going to do. Bear in mind this is only the second novelty cake I’ve ever made! I started just after 7 pm and put my cake into the oven. My hubby and I sat down for supper, and it was all normal routine for the evening. By 10 pm I was ready to get sculpting!
To be honest, I had no idea what I was doing! The lady who’d ordered the cake had previously worked overseas as a pastry chef, but just recently broken her ankle. And because we all know what broken promises to little girls lead to, she asked me to make the cake for her. The brief… a calico cat cake on a pink cat blanket please… with 24 cat cupcakes.
CALICO? What the hell! I’m a dog lover, what type of cat is calico? After looking to my second love, Google, I’d found a few answers.
Anyhow, by 12:30 am after spending 2 1/2 hours slicing away at my fresh sponge cake, I had what kind of resembled a sleeping cat… but it was far from calico at that point. I crumb coated and just sat watching it for a while trying to look at it through 9 year old Caitlin’s eyes, and to be honest, I was quite pleased. This is when it dawned on me that I hadn’t yet baked off my cupcakes, and like lightning rushed off to get the batch into the oven.
I finished off the detailing on “Mr C” – that’s what I named him… and started off on my cupcakes, which had my imagination running wild! I couldn’t believe how much fun I was having! At this point, I was covered in butter cream icing and glitter, and my kitchen looked as though all 3 world war events happened right there!
Needless to say by 2 am the next morning, Mr C and his 24 mini me’s were sitting on my dining room table ready to be collected! Although I hadn’t seen the look on birthday girls face her Dad quite made up for it!
I can’t wait to get started on the next adventure… and I call it adventure because I definitely went out of my comfort zone and ventured into the unknown.
