This was a cake made for a 2nd birthday… the cake is a carrot and walnut cake as it is easy to make a large batch. I made two round cakes, one large for the body and the other small for the head, plus four small oval cup cakes for the eye’s and feet.
Into the bottom of the large cake I cut the indents for the wings with a rounded section cut out for the body, then I trimmed 2 cupcakes for the feet making them the same shape to fit the rounded section of the body. Next, I trimmed the head to sit flush with the rounded top of the cake.
Using the scraps from the wings I added this to the head to make the curve on the top. I trimmed the other 2 cupcakes and sat them on the small head for eyes, then I covered the whole thing in cream cheese icing and proceeded to decorate.
I used crisp candied orange slices for the wings and head, bought banana chips for the chest and eyes, grated chocolate for the feet and flaked toasted almonds to cover the sides and rest of the head. The beak was a molded marzipan carrot.
This homemade owl birthday cake was a lot of fun to do and only took me an hour to decorate once I had all the pieces.
