This penguin cake was a birthday cake for a friend’s son who loves penguins. I just took a toothpick to draw a basic shape for the penguin onto a sheet cake.
I then outlined the shape in black and filled it in with a small round tip. To smooth out the colors, I dipped my finger in cornstarch and patted the buttercream flat.
At this time, my son wants a penguin cake (unless he changes his mind. Again.) I like this one. I had never hear of using corn starch on your finger to flatten the frosting. I had always just tried using a knife, but not very successfully.
Thank you for writing how you got the butter cream smooth. My daughter wants this type of cake and she doesn’t want fondant. I couldn’t figure out how to get it so smooth. Thanks
