This Piggy Birthday Cake was for my daughter, Caymen’s 6th birthday party that was farm themed and held at a petting farm with pony rides and a hay ride. My daughter loves pigs and I wanted to try to make a pig cake. I have never done anything like this and Googled pig cakes, which led me to your website. I took different ideas from several cakes and between that and youtube cake decorating demonstrations, I was able to make a pretty good cake.
I baked the cakes and cupcakes two days before, let them cool, wrapped them in Siran wrap and aluminum foil, and froze them. I started with a large chocolate sheet cake and two round yellow cakes. The body was 10″ and the face was 6″. A carved cupcake was the ears and a cupcake for the nose. They are easier to cut when frozen.
The chocolate cake was iced in milk chocolate icing (the mud) and later trimmed with a dark chocolate. I frosted the two round cakes with buttercream frosting tinted pink and drew the eyes and mouth in with black and white frosting.
I bought a small Wilton decorating kit at Wal-Mart. I had never used one but found it easier than I expected. After assembling the cake, I did a “shell” border along the edges and seams with dark chocolate and a darker pink.
I made pig cupcakes (for her class party the day before) that came from this site and used the tops of 4 of these for the piglets.
My daughter loved it, as did friends and family. Thank you to this great site.
