This Pirate Cake is my favorite cake of all so far because of all of the work that went into it and also the results. To make the ship, I used 2 eight inch round chocolate cakes and cut the first into the base of the boat and used the edges of the other one to make the top half of the boat.
I made homemade chocolate marshmallow fondant which was cheap and easy and tasted just like tootsie rolls, and added a little more brown to it to get it darker. I then painted on the lines of the ship using brown Wilton coloring and vodka (The vodka evaporates). I piped on black icing for the windows on the ship.
I bought a pirates of the Caribbean cake set online and used pieces for the cake, but not all of them. For the flags I printed off pictures online and created personalized flags for my nephew and poked them through skewers. For the bottom cake, I used homemade yellow cake in a giant sized Wilton pan (not sure of the size, but takes two cake batters to fill). I made homemade blue icing for the water and then topped it off with piping gel and blue coloring to get the water effect.
For the sand I used crushed vanilla wafer cookies. The crabs and shells were made from homemade marshmallow fondant. I used a McDonald’s Pirates of the Caribbean treasure box and filled it with gold Hershey kisses.
