Coolest Pirate Ship and Deserted Island Birthday Cake

I showed my son several of the cakes on this site and, of course, he chose the ship. As a totally inexperienced cake decorator the thought was a bit terrifying, but seeing the pictures and instructions here proved hugely helpful.

Because I wasn’t sure how to make two halves of a round cake stand up, I chose to use two loaf pans for the body of the ship. I carved away the excess and used the extra bits to build up the back of the ship. Evidently I carved away a little too much from the back because after icing it the ship broke… thus the Lego boulder. I used this to prop up the broken piece, re-iced it and added the railing, cannons and masts. In the end, no one knew there had been a shipwreck.

The deserted island was significantly easier. I used a thin round cake (made from the leftover batter from the loaf cakes) to create the island and shave it down a little to make the beach. Graham cracker crumbs over white frosting made the sand and more Legos helped make the cake fun.

This Pirate Ship and Deserted Island Birthday Cake was the perfect addition to a pirate party and earned me “best-mom-ever” status.
