Coolest Pirate Ship Birthday Cake

I wanted to make my son a Pirate Ship Birthday Cake for his 2nd birthday. I searched for various ideas to base it on from books and on here.

To make the cake I made a 8″x8″ square choc cake. Once it was cool I cut the square in 2. I then sandwiched 1 1/2 of the 2 pieces together using chocolate frosting. And then cut the front and back into points to try and make the shape of the ship (the other 1/2 of the cake I was forced to eat as leftfovers!).

Once the whole cake was covered in frosting. I layered it with chocolate fingers to look like the wood of the boat. Using smarties as portholes.

I used playpieces to put pirates etc on and also pirate shaped candles. Once I put the sails on it looked like a proper boat. I made this cutting rectangles out of coloured paper, and attaching a skewer through them. In the book they were plain, but I wanted to personalize the cake. If I was artistic enough I would have added a Jolly Roger.

It was a easy cake to decorate especially once the choc fingers went on. So my tip would be if you don’t think it looks like a boat yet (I was despairing as mine just looked like a odd shape cake )go and put the fingers and decorations on for the overall effect. You can always come back and alter the shape of the cake again.
