I was inspired by this site to do a homemade Pirate Ship birthday cake for my son’s first birthday and I am really pleased with the way it turned out.
To make the boat shape I used my normal round cake tins. I made two sponge cakes the same as I would usually make for a Victoria Sandwich and when they were cooked and cooled I sliced them in half down the middle, this left me with four semi-circles. I stood these up on their sides and sliced a little off the curved bottom of each so that they would sit flat. I used butter icing to hold them together and then covered them all with chocolate icing. This was surprisingly easy to do and looked very effective.
I then used mint-twig (matchmaker) chocolates broken into small pieces around the edge of the decking, white chocolate buttons for portholes and Rolo’s for cannons. On the back (not shown in picture) was a jammy dodger biscuit for the life ring.
My husband printed the sails off his computer and I stuck them onto wooden kebab sticks and we were lucky enough to already have a pirate Lego set that we could use.
All of the party guests were very impressed with this homemade pirate ship birthday cake. Luckily I have discovered this website so that I can try and out-do myself next year!
