This Pirate Ship Cake was for my good friend’s son for his daycare family picnic. I decided instead of making cupcakes, I would do something that would be fun for the kids.
It is just 2 white boxed cake mixes, baked as directed, only I used two different pans. I used 2 9×13’s and a smaller casserole dish (probably 5×9 or so). When they came out of the oven, I placed them in the freezer for about an hour. After taking the out of the freezer, I leveled them and then cut them in the shape of a tug boat-just your basic boat shape.
Each layer, I made a little bit bigger than the last. Then I placed them on top of each other and crumb coated them, and put them back in the freezer. I used just plain chocolate frosting and frosted the entire cake. I used the extra cake to make the treasure chest and upper deck. The back and the stairs, as well as the plank are just chocolate and vanilla wafers cut to the size that I needed.
The sails in the back are just skewer sticks with cardstock on top. I had to do something because the back wafers were too heavy from the frosting. I used 2 small round Martha Stewart glass dishes for the rounds under the main sails, just cut them to the size you are looking for.
The water is just the leftover vanilla frosting that I didn’t use for crumb coating-tinted blue and put directly on the pan with a spatula-just let it be for the “waves”. It was a big hit, all the kids and teachers loved it!
