This Pirate Ship Cake was a first birthday cake for a friend’s son. She wanted to do a pirate theme, and I was happy to oblige. This was definitely a simple cake, and I will be making it again sometime.
I started with one sheet cake for the bottom, and two 8in square cakes. Place the sheet cake on your board, then take one square cake and cut in half diagonally to make two triangles. Stack the two triangles on top of each other, then on top of the sheet cake to make the front of the ship. You will have to trim the sheet cake to make it fit.
Then, I took the second square cake and cut it in half horizontally to make two rectangle shapes. These were stacked on the sheet cake to make the back of the ship. I iced the whole ship, using an icer tip, in chocolate icing. I then used a toothpick to draw lines for the wooden planks. The rails are made of pirouette cookies, Rolo candy for the gold, and for the treasure chest, I took a Hershey bar and stacked a few of the pieces on top of each other. Though it is hard to see, there are stacks of Whoppers candy in the corner to look like cannonballs.
Because it was his first birthday, I also make him a baby smash cake. I simply used one 8 in round, cut in half and put together to make the boat shape. I then used the candles the mother provided me with.
