I made this Pirate Ship cake for my son Tyler for his 4th Birthday. I stacked two cakes on top of one another and started carving away. I like to use homemade marshmallow fondant because it is cheaper and tastes a whole lot better for the kids. (Recipe is one bag of marshmallows melted with a tablespoon of water in the microwave and then slowly add one bag of powered sugar).
For this cake I used the “cocoa swirled” marshmallows to give it a chocolate taste and to also help with the brown color I wanted to achieve. I covered the cake in the chocolate fondant and then used tootsie rolls as the railing, rope, and anchor. I used two Rollo’s for the barrels. I found the pirates at a party supply store.
For the sails, I printed them on computer paper and then “tea stained” them and then baked in the oven for 10 min. (I also made a treasure map this way!) They are held up by wooden skewers that I also stained with tea.
The “birds nest” was made with a medicine cup (the kind that come with children’s medicine) and I wrapped it with tootsie roll “rope”. The wheel for the ship was made from pretzels. To add planks and detail I used edible paint and I added butter cream icing at the bottom for the water detail.
Tyler LOVED his cake and I had fun making it!
Wow! How bout coolest dad ever. Good job!
