Coolest Pirate Ship Cake

I made this pirate ship cake for my son’s sixth birthday. I got the idea from another similar cake I saw on the web. I baked a round cake and trimmed the top to make it level. I cut it in half and stacked the halves on top of each other using frosting in the middle to hold them together.

I trimmed the bottom (the rounded end) to make it flat so it would stand up when I turned it on it’s side. I turned it on it’s side and this made the basic shape of the ship.

I frosted the cake with plain chocolate icing and used candy bars (Twix I think) and black licorice sticks to decorate. The gold pieces were unwrapped candy (Rolo I think) and the rest of the decorations were various pirate toys that my son already had.

The water is made with shredded coconut that I tossed in a bowl with some blue food coloring. There were going to be quite a few kids at this party so I made a companion cake to go with the pirate ship so I would have enough to feed everyone.

The companion cake was an island cake. It was just a single layer round cake frosted with cream color frosting. I placed a toy palm tree and some other pirate toys on the cake and placed it in another bed of dyed coconut to look like water. If I make this again I would probably use a lighter brown frosting on the pirate ship and try to texture the frosting a bit more.

On the island I would maybe dye some sugar to mimic sand and definitely put an “X” on the island. I don’t’ know why I didn’t think of that at the time.
