Coolest Pirate Ship on the Seven Seas Cake

I have a pair of boy/girl twins and I try to always make them their own birthday cake. This year, for their 4th birthday, we did a theme of Pirates and Princesses. This is the pirate ship cake that I made for my son.

The cake recipe is an eggless, dairy-free chocolate recipe that I got years ago from a friend. The ship itself is covered in chocolate butter cream frosting, while the water is a butter cream colored with Wilton icing. The writing and ship portholes were made using a tube of gel style frosting. Inspiration came from browsing on coolest-birthday-cakes.com because I wasn’t sure of the best way to get a 3D effect for the ship.

This cake was made using 2 9×13 sheet cakes. One was used as the base to form the ocean. The other was cut in half and “glued” together with a layer of frosting. I then trimmed the ends to give it more of a boat shape. The base of the ship is braced up with a kit kat. Malt balls were used as cannon balls, candles as the cannons, and candy treasure chests and some toy gold coins completed the decorations.

To make the ship’s sails I had to use what I had on hand! In this case – 2 wooden kabob sticks. I left the middle one whole so it would be taller. The other was broken in half. The sails are computer paper cut into squares and then pushed through the sticks. I hand drew a jolly roger for effect.

This Homemade Pirate Ship on the Seven Seas Cake not only looked cool and got a lot of complements but it tasted delicious as well. This pirate ship was quickly history!
