This pool party cake was a cake I made for my son’s 10th birthday. It was my first time using fondant, so I worried, but it was actually fun and fairly easy! We were in the middle of moving, so I didn’t stress about the cake itself too much for the sake of time. Simple yellow boxed cake mix in a 9X13 pan, but I did make the icing myself. Butter cream icing recipe that’s super delicious and easy to work with: powdered sugar, softened butter, vanilla, and a couple tablespoons of milk. Again, it was kind of rushed so the base icing is not as cleanly spread as I would have liked it to be, but ten-year-old’s don’t care, they just want it to taste good!
For the pool I added Wilton’s icing gel in royal blue to my butter cream frosting, then added some sparkle gel to give it a little more of a water look to it. Then I piped some white icing around the edge to finish the look.
For the people and beach towels I used the store bought, pre-colored Wilton’s fondant. I just shaped it like I was making a play-doh sculpture and it worked out pretty well! For the finer details of the faces though, I did use a toothpick to give the eyes, nose and mouth something to sit into, then used the toothpick to carefully place them in.
The whites of the eyes are white icing so they would “stick.” For the blonde boy’s hair I made one long yellow strand of fondant and just haphazardly wove it on his head. For the tie-dye look on the yellow/red towel: at first I was going to try to mix the yellow and red to make orange, but it got all marble-y instead of mixing, so I went with it!
Finally, for the lettering I simply put the leftover blue icing from the pool into a Ziploc baggie and cut a tip on the corner. Worked great! Then finished off the cake with two tropical drink umbrellas.
All the kids at the party approved!
