We have a movie projector so we decided to do a movie night theme for my daughter’s 5th birthday. I got inspiration for this Popcorn Birthday Cake from this site.
Made an 11×15 chocolate cake, it was harder to hide than a white cake as suggested, but my daughter requested chocolate specifically. Found a buttercream frosting recipe from a youtube video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lGYsmDA7wc&videos=poLBBbiOgc4&playnext_from=TL&playnext=1. Wanted one that would be a pure white without a yellow tint to it.
It was still hard to get a smooth finish but this was my first cake so I’m sure it was user error. The cake was actually a recipe from a Kitchenaid recipe book but I added more vanilla for more flavor.
For the label in the middle I cut out an oval shape out of chipboard with my scrapbooking supplies and covered it with foil. Then I put a coat of red frosting over it and wrote with a fondant icing pen. I don’t have great handwriting and the pen was difficult to use so maybe I’d just print it out next time.
The popcorn I made like rice crispy treats, unbuttered popcorn, marshmallows, and butter but for a touch more flavor I added the clear vanilla extract that I used in the icing. I then placed it around the top and some on the sides. I used strawberry fruit by the foot for the stripes as suggested.
The kids and adults were impressed and gobbled up almost the entire cake! My daughter LOVED it!
to get a white frosting I use a Wilton recipe.it’s 1c. Crisco,4tbsp. milk,4c. powdered sugar and 1tsp.vanilla(I buy a clear vanilla at my cake store.)I love this recipe and use it for every cake I make. hope you try it! your cake looks great!
Very cute. It looks like you put a lot of work/care into this cake. Nice job.
