Looking over the castle cakes posted at this site gave me the inspiration for my princess castle 3rd birthday cake. I used many of the tips others so graciously provided. To ease the entire process I did preparations a few days ahead.
Two days before I cut out all the windows, doors and candy accessories. The next day I baked, filled, shaped and thinly iced the cake and placed it in the refrigerator. I also iced all the ice cream cones. The last day, I iced the cake and added the towers and accessories. In addition, I found that adding a box of instant pudding to the cake mix gave the cake an better texture to work with.
Since I had to transport my cake, I placed long thin sticks through the upper cake layers for the upper towers and cut out the corners of the top layer of the bottom cake so the bottom towers set into the castle. This really helped to support them. I brought extra icing and accessories for minor mending when I reached my destination.
