My best friend’s daughter is mad about cats and the color purple. So when she came to me, asking if I could make her daughter’s 3rd birthday cake, naturally it was going to be a purple cat face.
I made a vanilla butter cake and tinted it pink. Baked it in a square tin and cut the shape out. The recipe I used had a bunch of reviews saying that it made a very decent sized cake, but I’d heard that before and didn’t believe it so made two batches, it was more than enough.
So I baked the second cake anyway and took it to my father in law’s for dessert, but kept a little bit of it to make the raised nose on the cat’s face. After I’d cut the shape out to what I thought looked good enough, I covered the nose and inside of the ears in white butter cream icing, then covered the rest in the purple icing. I scored the markings for where the darker triangles were going to go and set to the task of piping out the stars all over the face.
I tinted the remaining purple a bit more and piped the darker purple triangles in. For the nose and tongue I used different amounts of Rose colored gel paste and for the whiskers and mouth shape I used licorice. The eyes are dark chocolate buttons with a tiny bit of white icing in the centers. I wasn’t completely happy with the eyes but it was the only thing I could think of. I’m still pretty new to cake decorating and it took an hour to decorate.
Overall I am really pleased with it. The party girl knew exactly what it was and she loved it!
