Coolest R2D2 Birthday Cake

My friend wanted an R2D2 birthday cake for her nephew so I did some research and found nothing I liked. This cake was made by using a 3 inch R2D2 figurine as my model. He measures approximately 16 inches high.

It was tough to figure out how to get him tilted so he looked authentic. Finally, I decided to use a 2 gallon plastic bucket that I cut down to just the base and a strip up the back to keep the cakes from sliding apart. I screwed the bucket to a 2 inch thick board and ran a 1 inch dowel rod up through it at an angle for stability. The cakes (6 of them)were then stacked onto this “platform” and crumb coated.

The legs and dome of R2’s head are rice cereal treats. I shaped them and ten cut a very thin slice off the top of each to smooth them out. Once the shaping was done they were crumb coated as well.

Everything was covered in fondant and the blue and silver parts painted using food coloring.
