My husband loves Star Wars and what a better way to celebrate than with an R2D2 Birthday Cake. The cake is chocolate and was baked in a 12×18 square pan. The arms are made out of rice krispies.
Using the sketches that I made as a guideline, I cut the cake away and formed the dome and trimmed off some of the excess cake, then put it in the freezer to set for about 1 hour. Piped a few of the body images with tinted blue butter cream icing and froze these to make a 2D image on the cake.
I took the cake out of the freezer and crumb coated it with a home made butter cream icing and returned it to the freezer again for about 20 min, which ensures that the fondant would not tear upon laying it. I prepared the marshmallow fondant (from scratch), rolled it to the proper size, length and thickness. Took the cake out and rolled my fondant over it. This automatically created a bond between the cake and the fondant.
I sprayed on edible silver spray for the dome. My ruler prevented the silver to go on the rest of the cake. Forming the rice krispies wasn’t too hard. I had a template to work with. Once I coated the rice krispie with butter cream icing, I froze the legs for 10 min then laid the fondant over the arms and began to shape. Left over fondant was tinted in a royal blue to make the other non-piped shapes.
When the cake was all decorated, I decided to spray the silver spray on a few areas to have the “battle wounds” affect.
This cake is amazing!
Thanks Jo. It was lots of fun and challenging.
