Easy R2D2 Birthday Cake Design

For my son’s 6th birthday, he wanted a Star Wars theme. So, I decided to make an R2D2 Birthday Cake Design instead of buying a store-bought themed cake. I’m a novice cake-maker and I’m not one to follow elaborate recipes, so I figured I’d make it as creatively and easily as possible.

I used 2 boxes of marble cake mix and baked it in one circular and two rectangular cake pans. One rectangular cake became the “body”; the 2nd I cut in two which became the “legs”; and the circular I cut in half which became the “head.”

I frosted with a white vanilla buttercream frosting…lots of butter used! For R2D2’s head, we added about 2/3 small bottle of blue food coloring to the frosting.

To help connect the body parts with a smooth frosting finish so as not to break up the cake, I used Pillsbury Easy Frost No-Fuss Vanilla Dream Frosting. I’m so glad that I picked that up at the grocery store on a whim! It worked great to hide the cake seams.

Because I wanted my son and daughter (8) to join the fun, they helped put on the finishing touches by decorating the frosted cake with candy. We used black licorice, hard candy mints, and York peppermint flavored dark chocolate pieces in blue & white. We had such a blast.

Lastly, a word of advice when assembling the cake, I wrapped a large cutting board with aluminum foil because I knew the cake would need an extra-wide surface in order to transport to his birthday party location. The silver foil added to the space-age look too!

It took time, but it was so worth it to do it for and with my kids.
