This R2D2 from Star Wars Cake was for my son’s 6th birthday. He’s a huge Stars Wars fan and I found many inspiring cakes from this section here at Coolest Cakes!
I made this cake using a round metal bowl for his head and three layer cakes for the body. My bowl was only about 4 inch diameter, so I cut the 6 inch layer cakes down to fit. The arms are made of rice krispies treats.
I used marshmallow fondant to cover the entire cake and make the blue accents. I used butter cream icing for the details.
While not perfect, it’s my first attempt at both using fondant and making a layer cake. This was both fun and surprisingly easy to make! For anyone who has never worked with marshmallow fondant, I can recommend giving it a try. It has a lot of room for error and tastes much like the icing! I also used a layer of frosting to hold the fondant on per the recommendations of that recipe. I used chocolate fudge and I was relieved to find it did not bleed through.
