I made this race track cake for my son’s 4th birthday. The look on his face the first time he saw it was priceless. It made all my time and effort worth it! I got the idea on this site. I used a 9×13 and then a 9 in. round cut in half on both ends.
I used peppermint Lifesavers cut in half to line the track as was suggested. I crushed Oreos for the track. I made chocolate icing to go underneath the track, and the rest was homemade buttercream. I used the grass tip for the grass around the edges of the Lifesavers, and I think that made it look more realistic. I used fudge covered graham cookies for the wall around the track. I asked the bakery at our local grocery store for the checkered flags, so they were free!
The cake is sitting on a large rectangular Rubbermaid container lid covered with a vinyl checkered flag table cloth that I had ordered online. I made the cake the night before the party, and did not cover it with anything. The icing served as a crust, and the cake did not dry out. Everyone was impressed, and I told them about this awesome site!
