Initially I had crafted a tower out of rice crispie treats for the left side of the cake and a small river to the right, but I ran into fondant problems so I had to re-route the river last minute to cross the Rapunzel “Tangled” Lantern Scene Cake.
I used a 9×13 pan, the birthday chip cake mix, and a bucket of Wilton icing. I used Duff electric food color for the green, blue for the river, and the pink and purple for writing, and decorating. I learnt a trick with VIVA paper towels to make the cake much smoother than they usually turn out. Also, I used black color for the gray rocks and added juniper green to the Duff lime green for the grass around the river.
Thankfully, Toysrus had the boat and figures on sale last week for 9.99, and I had a 3$ off birthday coupon so I got the topper for 7$ which isn’t bad at all. (For those of you looking for Rapunzel cake toppers, the posed figures on eBay for $7+ are from the boxed set of figures on the Disney store site. You can get all of them for 12.50…)
If anyone has any questions on tips used or anything else (this is my first time posting) please let me know.
Oh and the bucket of icing was $15 reg. but both Hobby Lobby and Michaels have 40% off coupons every week, so use one of those.
Have fun!
I loved your idea! I’m going to make this cake this week. What was your trick using the paper towels?
If you put the cake in the fridge for 10 minutes or so, or leave it out for 30 minutes to harden a bit, you can use plain (non-textured) VIVA brand paper towels to smooth it out like fondant.
I have yet to make my own icing that hardens like the big bucket of premade Wilton you can buy so I use that for the cake icing, and for decorating.
