First birthday themes are sometimes tough as the little ones don’t usually have strong preferences yet. Our son seemed to enjoy watching Sesame St. with his big brother though, so we decided on a Sesame theme. After much searching and with the help of others on this site, I created this Sesame Birthday Cake with Big Bird and Cookie Monster.
I used the Wilton butter cake recipe and made enough cake for 2 sheet pans (11×17) as well as a recipe for the Wilton ball pan and made LOTS of buttercream icing. I iced and stacked the sheet cakes, then put each half of the ball cake on the corners. I used yellow frosting and a leaf tip to create Big Bird’s feathers, marshmallows for his eyes (with pink, blue, & black for details), and a sugar cone for his beak. A grass tip and royal blue icing were used for Cookie’s fur and I piped and smoothed black on for his mouth. I piped on his eyes with white swirls, then added black eyeballs. I completed him with a 1/2 of a chocolate chip cookie.
Lastly, I used a larger shell tip to add a border and a writing tip for the print. We gave David Big Bird’s head to smash and eat. This cake was VERY heavy (in weight)! I do wish I had used a larger grass tip for Cookie Monster’s fur and stiffer icing for both the feathers and fur to get them to stand up better. The feathers and fur looked a little droopy in our WNY August weather!
