I made this cake for a friends daughter’s birthday party. It was a pirate theme. A few short cuts I did was buy box cake mix, the strawberry filling and the fondant. I colored the fondant and made the vanilla buttercream myself. I got the recipe from Martha Stewart’s website (the best I’ve had yet).
Vanilla Bean Buttercream Frosting:
You will need: 2 cups unsalted butter, room temp cut into small pieces, 3 and a 1/2 cups confectioners sugar sifted, a pinch of salt, 1 vanilla bean, scraped
1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 cup milk.
In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with paddle attachment beat butter until creamy. Slowly add confectioners sugar, beat to combine, scraping down sides as needed.
Add vanilla bean seeds and vanilla extract and beat to combine. Slowly add milk and continue beating on medium-low speed until smooth creamy about 5 minutes. I didn’t have vanilla bean so I added a pinch more vanilla extract and it was still yummy.
I layered the buttercream and strawberry filling. I did a nice crumb coat to even out the cake. I covered the cake with fondant, smoothed it out with a smoother (I received With my Cricut Cake. Then used the Cricut Cake (machine) to cut out the circle, skull, lettering and hearts. This came so handy because I made 36 cupcakes to match the cake.
A great tip when using the Cricut cake: freeze the fondant for 10 minutes, it made all the difference! I made the cut outs a day before so they were easier to handle. I used piping gel to “glue” everything together. After a day of fun I was done with the homemade she skull cake and 36 cupcakes (and my friend loved the cake).
Which cricut cake cartridge did you use?
