I made this Shrek Birthday Cake for my son’s 9th birthday party and it’s the first cake I’ve planned and made from start to finish. He and 7 friends had gone to the cinema to watch Shrek Forever After, so it seemed appropriate to try and make a Shrek themed cake!
It was made from Madeira sponge with vanilla buttercream and then covered in fondant icing. The “Beware Ogres” sign was made from coloured petal paste and painted on with food dust mixed with white alcohol. Unfortunately the fat Puss in Boots was too heavy and refused to stay clung to the side, so I had to resort to making a little green seat to hold him in place!
Donkey’s bottom was more helpful and was held in place with edible glue and a couple of pieces of dried spaghetti.
To do the writing, I downloaded some “Shrek font” that was free on the internet and used it to print out what I wanted. I then coloured some petal paste lime green and cut around each letter individually with a knife, using the printed letters as templates.
