I was asked to make a birthday cake for a friend’s little girl’s 3rd birthday, originally she wanted a Dora one – but then decided to choose a kettle from the “singing kettle”.
I started this Homemade Singing Kettle Birthday Cake by making a vanilla sponge in a Pyrex bowl, but when it was cooked realised that I hadn’t made enough cake mix to make it deep enough so I then made a round vanilla sponge.
I leveled off the round cake and sat the dome shaped one on top of it, using vanilla butter cream and jam to sandwich it together. I cut the dome shape along the middle to add more vanilla butter cream and jam.
I iced the cake with yellow fondant icing, using this to make the lid and spot too – the spout has cocktail sticks in it to hold it in place and was made first to allow it to dry and harden. I used florist wire for the handle and covered it in the icing. White fondant icing for the eyes and mouth and a black food colouring pen to add the details.
