For my son’s 7th birthday, I tried a snake cake. I bought scrapbooking paper that looked like dirt, put it on a piece of cardboard, and covered it with plastic wrap. I baked two cakes in bundt pans, cut each in half and laid the four pieces in the shape of the snake. I made homemade icing and before coloring it spread the sections in white. Then I colored some icing orange and spread the rest of the cake orange. I ended up having to create the black edges using the end of a chopstick to spread the black icing, but I might try squeezing store-bought black icing from a squeeze tube next time.
The eyes are from a craft store like you would buy to make a stuffed animal. I think those are cat eyes, actually. I cut the tongue out of green construction paper. Then my son picked out the bugs to lay around the snake.
This cake is one of my favorites of all the birthday cakes I’ve created for my two kids. It was a little time consuming to spread the icing, but you don’t really have to be that artistic and the cake still looks pretty impressive.
This is a very cool cake!! My little man loves snakes and his 6th birthday is in Dec…..I have been thinking about a theme and a cake and I think I just found it!!!
Very creative, thanks for the idea :)
