I started making cakes about 7 months ago. I have never taken a class of any kind and have learned by doing. This was a soccer birthday cake idea for my nephew. This was only my second time working with fondant so it isn’t perfect but I was happy with the turn out.
I used butter cream for the sides and the top under the fondant. The top of the 11×15 cake is leaf green fondant. Then I used the Wilton soccer ball pan for the soccer ball on the top. I used the soccer ball figures that I bought as a set at the local Bulk Barn. I used coconut around the sides and tinted it green by putting the coconut and green food coloring in a zip lock bag and shaking it a lot.
I learned a lot from doing this cake that I would do differently next time. I should have tinted the icing under the coconut green also so it wouldn’t show through so much. I also should have rolled the green fondant larger so the edges of it wouldn’t be so noticeable. I also found out after that if you use tip 233 with the leaf green icing and do a few spots of grass around the ball it looks more like the ball is breaking through the grass.
All in all I was thrilled with the cake but if someone else was going to try it for the first time those are ways to make it better.
