Coolest Solar System Cake

My son created the layout (after looking at pictures of other birthday cakes online) on paper for this solar system cake for his eighth birthday party. I baked a 9×13 single layer chocolate cake (recipe from Hershey’s cocoa box). I used white frosting tinted orange with food coloring for the sun, and topped it with orange edible glitter, and chocolate frosting colored with black paste food coloring for the sky, topped with black edible glitter to make it sparkle.

I cut out paper towel templates for the sun and sky to cover each section while frosting and “glittering” the other section. We made the planets out of white fondant with food coloring, and used silver/gray edible glitter for the asteroid belt. I took a piece of white fondant and rolled it out to make a banner to write happy birthday, and put that on the front side, attached with some frosting. I also added 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract to the frosting because my son likes chocolate mint flavored treats.

It was really fun to make, took a little time, but was not actually hard.

  1. Your cake is so neat! I would like to replicate it for my son’s birthday. I wanted to know what did you used to make your planets? Thanks! Glitter idea is fantastic!
