My daughter loves Sonic and wanted him on her birthday cake. I decided to make a scene from the game. I used two half sheet cakes. I made each one with two cake mixes. I tinted the batter blue. I cut a section out of the second cake and placed it on top of the first cake for the hill. Then I trimmed it down for the slope.
I then covered the whole cake with butter cream frosting. I then made the checkerboard design with two colors of brown marshmallow fondant (which I made a few days prior) and a square cookie cutter. I used two shades of green fondant for the grass strips and placed them on the hill. I took blue butter cream frosting and made the water area. The rock formations in the back are pretzel rods covered with fondant.
I made the palm tree by putting brown fondant on a pretzel rod and making fondant leaves (let them dry until hard before assembling) that I attached them with green frosting. The gold rings are made out of fondant held on with toothpicks.
For the Sonic sign I printed off a picture from the computer and attached it with a toothpick. Then I placed the toy figurines on the top. My daughter absolutely loved it! Everyone else at the party enjoyed it, too.
I am going to try and duplicate this cake. It will be my first. Wish me luck!!!
Good luck!! You can do it.
