Once I decided I wanted to try cake decorating, I took all the courses at my local craft store and then set out to learn as much as I could from web sites and cake forums. I was only making cakes for friends and family but really wanted a chance to donate them to charity organizations so I approached the local shelter for women and children of domestic abuse. After all, what could cheer up a little one in that situation more than their very own birthday cake.
So every month I make a cake either for a birthday child or just a fun cake for the monthly dinner of all the clients who are currently living there. This month I wanted to do an animated cake. I chose Sponge Bob. It is basically a sheet cake covered in fondant, with fondant arms. This was a fun one to do and the little kids at the shelter were so surprised. There is great satisfaction in knowing that I put a smile on their little faces.
