I made this SpongeBob birthday cake for my great nephew Ben’s third birthday as he loves SpongeBob. I sandwiched 2 Madeira cakes together with jam and trimmed cake to shape. I then coloured and rolled icing to make his tie, eyes, shorts, shoes, belt, eyebrows etc. I added these using more jam for his mouth.
I used licorice and black tube icing for the top part of his body. I made butter cream and yellow food colouring and piped this on. I used marzipan for his arms, legs and nose. I used a blue icing wash to cover the cake board and made bubbles out of different sized circles of rolled icing.
My tip would be if you need to used black for anything, i.e. open mouths you should use shop bought tube icing as getting the finish I wanted on the mouth I could not get by colouring white with the black as using the icing sugar to roll on makes it grey and the more colouring you use makes the icing to wet to work with.
I would be grateful for any ideas the regard to solving this problem.
