This Homemade Spongebob Birthday Cake came about because our friend’s son was turning 6 years old and my wife and I decided that we would make him a cake as his gift from us. So we asked him what he wanted and he said Spongebob.
My wife made a sponge cake and filled with jam and covered it with yellow butter icing and placed it in the fridge for an hour. We then got roll out icing, which we colored brown by adding coco powder, vanilla essence and knead till fully brown and rolled it out to 5mm thick and cut to shape for pants. We then rolled out some white roll out icing and cut to shape for shirt and collar. We also used some red roll out icing for the tie. I find you are better off buying the red roll out icing as apposed to making it as the color is better. When making your own yellow, blue and black roll out icing you’ll need to add some powdered icing to make it more stable because of the extra liquid in the dyes.
For cutting out the eyes we used a baby bottle for the white, a cola bottle top for the blue and smaller bottle top for the black. The mouth was cut free hand as were the checks. I recommend using some powdered icing and water as a paste to put the layers together. I also recommend drawing a picture of your desired cake a couple of times to make yourself more confident in your plan.
Cake took about 5 hours from start to finish including cooling time and the hour in the fridge to set the butter icing a bit.
