Coolest Spongebob Birthday Cake

My granddaughter wanted a Sponge Bob theme for her 4th birthday. So I made two 9 X 12″ yellow cakes from a mix and trimmed them down to make 2 layers. All the decorations were made from (purchased) gum paste except for the shirt and pants that were made from fondant.

The arms and legs were 1/4″ dowels 12″ long so they could be inserted deeply into the cake. My DGD loves purple hence the purple pants rather than brown. The mouth was shaped in a shallow cereal bowl; the eye balls in a meatball scoop; and the teeth in a rectangular measuring spoon. If these aren’t available look around your house or in Dollar stores.

The hardest part was working out the proportions. I found a picture of SB, cropped out all but the body, then enlarged it to 6 inches tall – roughly half the size of the finished cake. From that I tried to figure out the proportion of each part – pants, shirt, mouth, etc. I had never worked with gum paste before but found it to be very easy. And it was nice that I was able to fasten the parts weeks in advance. Had more trouble with the fondant but that may be because I made it the night before and was running out of steam. My big regret was the frosting. I’d purchased a large bucket at a cake decorating store but it didn’t taste as good as my own.
