Coolest Spongebob Birthday Cake

I made this Spongebob birthday cake for my son Fletcher’s 2nd birthday. I used a homemade chocolate cake recipe that I knew was very dense and tended to hold up to the fondant better. I baked one cake in a 9×13 pan, chilled the cake, cut it in half, then stacked one half on top of the other. I cut the corners, leveled the cake, then frosted the entire cake with chocolate icing.

I used a buttercream fondant recipe, then separated the fondant out to make the different colors using food coloring. I started with the yellow, rolled it out, placed it on the cake, then made the indentations for the “sponge” effect. I then did the white for the shirt, the brown for the pants, then red for the tie. I used a round cookie cutter for the eyes, and then, using a pizza cutter, cut out the small shapes for the eyelashes, mouth, and the stitching on the pants.

I used the leftover cake that I had cut off to fashion the sleeves and cover them in fondant. Then I used the leftover fondant to cut out the arms and hands.

The cake took me about six hours to do, but my son was super exited when he saw the finished product (and so was everyone else!). This was only my second time using fondant, and I was very pleased with the results.
