When my nephew decided on a SpongeBob theme for his 4th birthday, this treasure chest candle (bought at a craft store) gave me the inspiration for his Spongebob Castaway Island cake.
I baked two-9inch round tiers (vanilla.) After brushing the crumbs, I started with a base coat of cream cheese frosting (tinted blue with food coloring. I didn’t mix the blue food coloring all the way, in order to get the “waves” effect of the frosting water.) I just used a butter knife for the frosting on the side to create the waves.
For the “sand” I used plain graham crackers crushed fine in the food processor. The next part of decorating the beach was the most fun to do. I went to the bulk food section of our local grocery store and just bought a few pieces of candies I thought would look the most fun. (I think I spent only $2 total on the candy.) The fish stuck well to the cream cheese frosting on the sides, as well as a gummy octopus!
For the coconut trees I used the Piroutte cookies, flattened the spearmint green gummy leaves, and pushed them into the top. (A skewer could also be inserted inside the cookie to attach the leaves and then the cookie to the cake too.) For the coconuts in the tree I used malted milk balls.
The bananas and fruit are the Runts candies, and the holder for the fruit are a few pecans pushed in a circle. The gummy pop bottle and chocolate coin finished up the scene, and my nephew absolutely loved it. (Especially picking off the candy!)
I love it, very cool! inventive and different.
