This Spongebob Squarepants Birthday Cake was made for my sister, for her 21st – who is absolutely mad on Spongebob Squarepants. I’ve only just started making cakes, and this is my 7th one! I used a 6inch square cake tin, and made two cakes, allowed them to cool for 10 minutes before taking them out of the tin then allowed them to cool for a further half an hour before i started to decorate.
I spread jam on one cake, and chocolate buttercream on the other, then sandwiched them together. I then spread a thin layer of jam all over the entire cake, (to allow the icing to stick). I coloured sum white icing with the yellow colouring that you can buy in a pot, then rolled it out, using the rolling pin to lift the icing up onto the cake, then I moulded it in place.
For all the features of the face, I used the same method for the yellow, you can also mix coloured icing together to get different shades, like you would if you were painting a picture. Make sure you allow them to set hard before you apply them to the cake, as they will be easier to stick on, using edible glue.
If you enjoyed using modelling clay (playdoh) as a kid, this is exactly the same, except you can eat it!!
