I made this Spongebob Squarepants Birthday Cake for my 5 year old nephew from ideas that I got on this website. I compiled several different photos and put them all together to create my own version of Spongebob. It is a two layer cake filled with butter cream. I did a combination of fondant (to give some dimension) and piped buttercream frosting.
They eyes, mouth, shirt, tie, belt and spots are all made of fondant. I did a crumb coating and then applied all of the fondant pieces except for the belt. I used a “wash” (combination of brown food coloring and a touch of water) to paint the spots on his head. I then piped on the yellow with a star tip and for his brown pants I used a basketweave tip to give a different texture.
What made it really pop was outlining all of the features in black. My son pitched in and created a mini crabby patty out of the leftover fondant to complete the look! The party is tomorrow and I cannot wait to see the smile on his face!
