Coolest Spongebob Squarepants Cake

I came to this site looking for Spongebob cake ideas for my nephew’s 1st birthday party. I have a Wilton figure pan for Spongebob, but I didn’t want to use that. I saw the Spongebob Squarepants cake someone made with cupcakes, and I thought it was kind of cool but that it would look better if the cupcakes were more compressed together and not so gappy like that other arrangement.

I used 30 cupcakes (24 for the body and 6 for the legs/feet). Chocolate cake for the legs and pants area, yellow cake for the yellow parts. Standard Wilton buttercream recipe (Course 1 manual or http://www.wilton.com/recipe/Buttercream-Icing) – I was going for medium consistency, but my assistant kind of flaked and it was closer to the thick consistency. Still, the whole thing held up really well for the transport to the party and was wildly popular with everyone.
