Well this was my first attempt at ever decorating a birthday cake! I was pretty pleased with the result, but more importantly, my daughter (almost 5yrs old) was very impressed with the Strawberry Shortcake cake and she’s the ultimate judge.
I made a white cake and buttercream icing using recipes from the Wilton website, and strawberry jam between the two cake layers. The idea for the cake came from this website, but didn’t want to go to the time and expense of a 3 tier (like the cakes I got the design idea from). I used the strawberry figurine from last year’s store bought cake.
My cake was still frozen when I iced it, which seemed to prove a little challenging; I got the ‘tip’ from a video of youtube and am not sure I would do that again. My pink layer isn’t as good as I would have liked, but really was impressed with the effect of smoothing the icing out with a paper towel. For the lettering, I bought the black writing icing and spaced all my letters out with a toothpick holes.
