I actually got the idea for decorating my cake on this site. Instead of boxed cake recipes, I used a strawberry cake recipe that includes real strawberries. And I made the buttercream icing and fondant from scratch. It turned out really good. The recipe for the homemade Strawberry Shortcake cake design was easy too, it’s as follows:
1 box of white cake mix
1 (3oz) pk strawberry gelatin
4 large eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup finely chopped strawberries
1 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup milk
Mix all together on low speed then pour into your greased baking pans and cook on 350 for 30mins or until your toothpick comes out clean. I doubled my recipe to do all three cakes, (6″, 8″, & 10″)
The fondant recipe is:
1 cup of mini marshmallows
1 tbsp of water
1 1/2 cup of powder sugar
Put marshmallows in bowl, pour water over them, Cook in microwave for about 20 seconds. Stir until soupy, add sugar until you get a workable consistency. Once you turn it out onto your work surface, use Crisco shortening to keep it from sticking.
