This Super Mario birthday cake was made from 6″,10″,and 14″ rounds. The roads were made with black fondant rolled onto cake boards. These boards need to be cut to size after the cake is baked. If making this cake again I would use plywood as the base because the cardboard base I used started to buckle.
This case base should of been 18″ but I used a 16″ base and ended up not centering the cake on the board. This cake was about 45 pounds. The figures on the cake were from The K’NEX MarioKart Wii toys sold at most toy stores. The trophy was purchased from Party City. We broke off the plastic stand it came on and ended up putting it in a rice crispy treat covered in black fondant.
The candles were put in to some Styrofoam that was made to fit the cup. Most of all the decorations were made using Wilton fondant cutters or simple cookie cutters. The clouds were done using a Wilton flower fondant cutter and I used an edible marker to make the eyes. The Goombas were made using a Wilton bell fondant cutter and we added some legs.
The grass around the roads was made using the Wilton grass tip which covered up the cardboard ends. For the hills we used about a 3.5″ circle. This cake was for our son’s 8th birthday. He really loved this cake! The cake was a big hit at the party!! This cake took a very long time to make.
This is too awesome
