Coolest Super Mario Bros. Birthday Cake

After I paid way-to-much for a shaped cake for my son’s birthday, I decided that I would make his cakes myself from now on. Last year, we had a spectacular 3-D Spongebob. His request for this year is a Super Mario Bros. Birthday Cake.

So, after some research and planning, I made this small tiered cake (my first tiered cake ever). I used a yellow cake mix, and filled the layers with a chocolate fudge that I made from two candy bars and powdered sugar. I put a crumb coat on the layers, and then iced the entire cake in blue icing. I then used a piping bag and a leaf tip to make the grass. The piranha flowers were free-handed using a no. 4 decorating tip.

All of the decorations are just icing piped onto the blue background. The figures were purchased from Amazon.com, and were a delight for my son to play with after his party.

This cake was a huge hit with all the kids!
