This Super Mario Brothers Birthday Cake was 3 tiers and was for a little boy who just turned four. He wanted a Mega Mushroom on his cake and he and his brother were Mario and Luigi for Halloween so that was my inspiration.
The bottom tier was two 10 inch round cakes, the middle tier was two 8 inch round cakes. The mushroom base was 2 layers of a 6 inch round cake. The mushroom cap was made by baking the cake in an 8 inch diameter stainless steel mixing bowl. All tiers were iced with buttercream icing and then covered in Fondant.
I used pre-made fondant so the texture was just right. I added the colors by kneading color paste into the fondant. I used cardboard cake circles to separate each layer along with pine dowel rods cut to the height of each cake.
To transport the cake to the party, I had each tier in a box and the mushroom base and cap were separated. Because everything was covered in fondant, it made for easy assembly at the party.
Absolutely amazing!!!
