I started this Homemade Super Mario Brothers Birthday Cake by using (2) 10 inch cakes for the bottom layer, (1) 8 inch for the top layer and a ball pan for the mushroom. After layering and frosting the two bottom layers with light blue buttercream icing I cut one of the ball shape pans to make the bottom of the mushroom and use the other for the top. I think it was perfect that way.
I then piped the grass with the star tip. The other decorations, mushrooms, stars,clouds, ? marks, and mushroom circles and plants I had made ahead of time with royal icing free hand.
Once the bottom two layers were decorated I inserted a kabob stick into the top mushroom to make sure it was secure and did not move during transportation. The figures belonged to the Bday boy.
It was a great theme cake, had a great time decorating it took me back to my childhood.
